Astro 6D is best selling cooled DSLR of CentralDS. Low noise in long time exposure and best cost performance ratio of Astro 6D are the main reasons of huge popularity as astronomical cooled camera.
Canon released 6D Mark II as the successor of old 6D. But developed sensor technology was not applied and only 30% increase of pixel amount was done. This change made smaller pixel size and became the main reason of higher noise level of 6D Mark II compared to that of old 6D, in low light photography field.
At one time, we are seriously considered to release ‘Cooled 6D Mark II’ but we closed this plan and turned to upgrade Astro 6D.
We calls this upgraded camera ‘CDS Cooled 6D’.
Main features of CDS Cooled 6D compared to Astro 6D are below.
1.Removal of Excooler.
Then, we added ‘Active Cooling’ on the rear surface of heat sink body using a hidden cooling fan and new heat radiation fins.External fins of heatsink cylindrical body performs ‘Passive cooling’.
Two way cooling concept were combined and became ‘Hybrid cooling’.
Separated cooling modules were combined into one cooling module and became more compact and lighter.
To maximize cooling efficiency of passive cooling, we changed heatsink body of Astro 6D to big one( same as Cooled 5D Mark IV). The upgraded heat radiation performance of big heatsink made possible to maintain [Ambient air temperature -18C] cooling performance , even though the power input for cooling module was changed to 5V 1A.
3.USB 5V 1A Power
Excooler of Old Astro 6D accept 12V,3A DC input and make 8.5V for Peltier cooling module and 8V for canon camera body. Then supply these two DC Input to cooling Module and Canon dummy battery.
This method is convenient because 12V one source make two types of DC input and need not Canon’s Li-ion battery.
But it’s needed 12V 3A over DC adapter or Heavy weight Lead-sealed Battery for outdoor photography. Recently in very rare cases, we recognized electric interference of DC step down adapter for dummy battery in Excooler to Camera circuit.
InCDS Cooled 6D, Canon’s Li-ion Battery (LP-E6) is the power source of canon camera body and we distinguished it from the power system of cooling module to get rid of the possibility of electric interference.
This isolated power system of cooling module consume only 5V 1A and you can use power bank of smartphone or smartphone charger as a power source ofCDS Cooled 6D.
In Astro imaging field, mount design is so important because the camera will be combined to so many types of OTA’s.
We decided a standard Mount design (=CF2) for CentralDS cooled cameras.
The goal of CF2 mount design is minimized Vignetting / filter Usage / Various Connection / Steady and simple shape.
CF2 mount is having 22mm Flange back distance and support Full Frame and APS-C sensor. CF2 mount ring is fixed by 3 pcs of M3 Fixing screws to camera body and these fixing screws make possible CF2 mount to function as field rotator.
And this concept will be so valid for lenses installed rectangular baffle and to change the picture angle.
Since Astro 6D, Drop-In Filter Holder is basic adapter system of Astro Series cameras. DIFH is very useful tool but DIFH was so troublesome to install lens communication system on the lens mount.
And we made 2 types Lens adapters.
AF Adapter/ DIFH+MF adapter
These adapters can be installed CF2 mount by M72/M60 screw.
AF mount adapter can be attached easily by M60 x 0.75mm pitch thread and communication cable can be connected to circuit of body by a simple PCB connector. Now you can control the focus and aperture recent STM lenses or USM lenses with CDS Cooled 6D.
