EOS RP is a popular Full-Framemirrorless digital camera of Canon.
Noise level of 6D mark II on low light long time exposure photography was bad compared to that of former model 6D.
The CMOS sensor of eos RP shows same specification to 6D Mark II CMOS, but low light high iso images of RP are not same to 6D MarkII , shows very low noise (hot pixls and background noise pattern) compared to those of 6D markII.We think Digic8 processor and improved circuit design could make this good low light image quality.

5.7µm x 5.7µm big pixel size of Full Frame CMOS sensor is the important merit of RP as a astronomical camera compared to APS-C sensor equipped DSLRs in same price range.
Main features of CDS Cooled RP are below.
High-Efficiency Cooling System
CentralDS cooled cameras of CentralDS is use Thermo Electric Cooler to cool down image sensor. In CDS cooled RP, 36Watt high performance TEC module is installed . And expanded heat radiation area and new hybrid cooling system made it possible to reduce current consumption to 1.0A and to maximize cooling performance.
Relocation of Image Sensor
We took out the sensor and moved it towards the lens and made a cooling module. We came to the conclusion that this method is the best solution for the modification of digital camera which has such tight inner space.
We had questions about the reliability of the extended CMOS
connection cable and decided to test it.Before we performed the tests, we strengthened the ground circuit and made a heat sink and cold block to unite to the camera’s ground circuit and made shield covers.With the extended cable the camera worked well without any errors in still shot photography and in movie mode.
I guess that the CMOS cable delivers only digital signals. The lines are composed with pairs and the additional ground and shield has helped the stability of the circuit.
The mechanical shutter of eos RP became meaningless because the CMOS has been moved in front of the shutter and Shutter is in camera body. Digital cameras control the amount of light to the sensor by a combination of the mechanical and the electronic shutters.
The exposure time of Cooled RP can be controlled only by the electronic shutter. And in this case, shutter speed control of sub second exposures is not reliable and only 4sec over long shutter time are valid.
Drop In Filter Holder
The back focus distance between the image sensor and lens mount(canon EF or Nikon F ) allowed room for the drop in filter holder(=DFH48). This system makes it possible to install 2″ astronomical filters without detaching the lens. This is very useful including for narrowband imaging.
With a filter(2mm thickness) in Drop-In Filter Holder, Flange Back Distance of Camera Mount(CM2C) is 44mm, it’s same as the Canon EF/ EF-S mount. In case of Nikon Mount(CM2N) it’s 46.5mm same to normal Nikon F mount system.
**Drop-In Filter system of CM2C/ CM2N of Cooled RP have no electric contact points for body to lens communication. so the auto focus, lens information recording and pulse signal transfer for motor operation which are based on the communication between the camera body and the lens are disabled even when a Camera lens is used. 6. In case of Drop-In Filter system of CM2C/ CM2N you always have to focus lenses manually. Some lenses need power from the body for manual focusing and you cannot focus these lenses even manually when they are mounted on Astro Z6. 7. Electric View Finder is alive as before modification.
Hybrid Cooling
In Cooled RP , heatsink on outer housing of airtight chamber performs passive cooling.
And the fan on the rear side of TEC perform active cooling.
For efficient active cooling we added heatsink on back side and wind guide wall.
Therefore we can reduce the weight of camera and made small and simple cooled camera with high cooling performance.
CF2 Mount
In Astro imaging field, mount design is so important because the camera will be combined to so many types of OTA’s.
We made a standard Mount design (=CF2) for CentralDS cooled cameras.
The goal of CF2 mount design is minimized Vignetting / filter Usage / Various Connection / Steady and simple shape.
CF2 mount is having 22mm Flange back distance and support Full Frame and APS-C sensor. CF2 mount ring is fixed by 3 pcs of M4 Fixing screws to camera body and these fixing screws make possible CF2 mount to function as field rotator.
USB 5V 1A Power Bank
In cooled RP, Canon’s Li-ion Battery LP-E17 is the power source of canon camera body and we seperated it from the power system of cooling module to get rid of the possibility of electric interference.
This isolated power system of cooling module consume only 5V 1A and you can use power bank for smartphone or smartphone charger as a power source for cooling module of cooled RP.
Upgraded Noise Reduction performance
Highly intensive electric parts in digital cameras cause electric noise.
CMOS of cooled RP is isolated from the camera body and it’ free from the internal electric noise and fully protected from external noise by aluminum housing and it’s possible to make noise free Astro images. In addition, the cold block attached on CMOS reduce the background noise dramatically. Please see below test shots.
